Topanga State Park Run - 14 miles

6/26/2011 - Topanga State Park, Los Angeles,California.
Trail run in the Santa Monica hills mostly on fire roads and some single track trails. The run is about 14 miles.

Distance: 13.99 miles
Course: Start the run at the end of Westridge Rd. Run north about 3 miles to the Nike radar station (water available) turn west on Mulholland and stay on the left to merge into Farmers road, this road is then connects back to Mullholand but it is a nicer run as it is a single track and more technical. Keep running west on Mulholland for about half a mile and turn left to the single track trail. Run on the trail up to Temescal Fire Rd. which later connects to Mulholland. Take Mulholland east to retun to the starting point in the same course.  

Elevation profile: net zero, climb and decent of about 1,936 ft
Crowd: Recreational runners and walkers

The challenging part: The single track trail off Mulholland can be slightly technical with occasional steps running.

Road Run - Venice to Santa Monica - 11 miles

Run 11 miles along the Pacific from Venice to Santa Monica and back.

Distance: 11.24 miles
Course: Start the run at the intersection of Washington Blvd and the beach in Venice, run south until the paved road ends and make a left hand turn to run in the narrow and charming streets of Venice, keep going along the water and loop back to the beach to head up north towards Santa Monica. Coming back to the starting point in the same way.

Runyon Canyon Park ~5.5 miles Run

6/16/2011 - Runyon Canyon Park, Los Angeles,California.
True muscle endurance, running up Runyon Canyon on the Unit path (west trail)  and one more time through the east trail. totaling 5.5 miles.
Distance: 5.47 miles
Course: Start the run at the intersection of La Brea and Hollywood Blvd, run east to Vista Ave and turn right heading up to the park. Once in the park start running up on the paved road and shortly after take the left hand turn to the Unit trail. Run all the way up and then down on the paved road, to run up again through the steps trail on the east side of the park.

Elevation profile: net zero, climb of 1,320 ft

The challenging part: The Unit path can be technical and is very steep. The east trail is running up steps.

Runyon Canyon Park ~4 miles Run

An uphill 2 miler up Runyon Canyon Park over the paved road and back down totaling 4 miles of a scenic run with great crowds of like-minded runners.

Course: Start the run at the intersection of La Brea and Hollywood Blvd, run east to Fuller Ave and turn right heading up to the park. Once in the park turn left to the paved road which runs up to the top of the hill.

Tecopa Rd (NV High desert) 5K / 100 degrees F

6/5/2011 - Road run review, Tecopa Rd, Nevada.
Warning: This 5K run took place in the high desert around Death Valley in extreme warm and dry weather conditions.  Full review of the run is below, run is  about 5K all along Tecopa road:

Distance: 3.19 miles
Course:The run starts at the intersection of Tecopa Rd and Route 160 in Nevada.The run is 5K south west along Tecopa Rd. Course is flat and on a paved road. The course is narrow and is shared with motorized vehicles. I started the run around 2:30PM and the temperature was about 100 degrees Fahrenheit. My plan was to run 10K but because of the extreme weather conditions I stopped after 5K. I enjoyed the powerful views and colors of the desert and the challenge of running with significant headwind all throughout the course.

Elevation profile: net elevation loss ~300ft.

Topanga State Park, California. Trail run 12 miles

Cruise while running along the ridge and brace up for some technical run down to and up from the creek.  Full review of the run is below, run is  about 12 miles mostly on fire roads and single track trail.

Distance: 12.07 miles
Course:The run starts at the parking lot in the end of Via La Palmas.  The run starts with a climb up to the ridge on a fair fire road then down to the creek and up again to the ridge and back to the starting point.

Elevation profile: net zero, total elevation gain 1,950ft.

The easy part: Running on the ridge not very technical
The challenging part: Overgrown trees down at the creek, plenty of poison oak

These are mountain, unpaved trails and paved road courses; some are away from medical services. The Paths have numerous risk factors which include, just to name a few out of many others, rattlesnakes, coyotes, mountain lions, ticks, poison oak, and other potentially dangerous and harmful animals, vegetation, fire hazards,  and other dangerous and harmful elements. Wearing sun block will protect your skin and should be taken into your consideration before exposing your skin to the sun.

If you choose to participate in Activities based on one, some or all of the reviewed Paths you assume all risks associated with your Activities, including varying and/or existing potentially harmful or hazardous weather conditions including but not limited to high heat and/or humidity, varying and/or existing conditions of the trails and roads, animals, poison oak, and traffic on the Paths including travel to and from the Paths, and including but not limited to trips, slides or falls of cliffs or steep slopes and contacts with other participants, all such risks being known and appreciated by you, and including all direct or indirect injuries or death that may be suffered before, during, or after an Activities.

It is highly recommended to perform the Activities as part of a group of multiple people. In addition it is highly recommended that you will carry essentials which include but are not limited to at least 64 Oz. of water, 4 energy bars, map of the area with a marked course, watch, GPS, cellular phone and a first-aid kit.
